Research Internship
The Health Services Research Internship, part of the Program on Applied Health Services Research and Smoking Cessation Intervention (PASSION) within the Section on Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drug Use at NYU Langone Health, is open to current or recent undergraduate and master s students. This internship aims to prepare participants for careers in health fields, including MD or graduate degrees, by offering an inside view of healthcare system operations. Interns assist with research and contribute to projects focused on providing preventive care within urban populations served by NYU Langone and its partner institutions. The program helps interns develop essential research skills, expand their knowledge of public health and health services research, and increase their understanding of the field's needs, challenges, and career opportunities. Participants gain exposure to the clinical and health services research process through structured, hands-on training and active involvement in data collection and analysis. Training covers fundamental research components such as methodology, grant processes, manuscript preparation, and institutional review boards. Interns contribute to ongoing research projects, particularly in areas like tobacco cessation and broader health services research. Typical responsibilities include study recruitment tasks like enrolling participants from outpatient clinics and inpatient wards, obtaining informed consent, and conducting in-person baseline surveys and telephone follow-up surveys. Other research activities may involve collecting saliva samples, administering carbon monoxide breath tests, phlebotomy (with provided training), data entry and management, retrospective chart review using electronic health records, and scientific literature review for papers and grant applications. Interns are also expected to present an article at a monthly journal club, attend research seminars with departmental and visiting faculty, and shadow a primary care physician in a clinic. Opportunities to learn basic statistics and SAS software may also be available. The internship requires a commitment of 15 hours per week on site, including a weekly team meeting, and adherence to program and institutional policies. Successful completion is based on fulfilling assigned research duties and demonstrating proficiency in research, public health, and professional competencies. The program is unpaid, but students may be able to obtain course credit.
