The Bithell Fellowship in German Studies offers funding to researchers specializing in the literature, language, and culture of German-speaking countries. This visiting fellowship provides an opportunity to spend three to six months at the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies (ILCS) during the academic year 2025-26. The program is sponsored by the Bithell Trust, established in memory of Jethro Bithell and Alice Emily Bithell, generous benefactors to the Institute of Germanic Studies, the ILCS's predecessor. The fellowship is open to applicants from both the UK and overseas who have successfully completed and defended their doctorate prior to commencing the fellowship. Preference is given to candidates with a demonstrated publication record, including at least one journal article, and clear plans for future academic publications. An award of up to £7,500 is provided to contribute towards temporary living expenses while in London or to support taking leave from employment to further studies. While at the Institute, Fellows receive shared office accommodation with essential facilities such as wifi, internet/email, and photocopying services. They gain access to the Institute's dedicated Germanic Studies Library and Archives, the broader Senate House Library, and the collections of other Institutes within the School of Advanced Study. Fellows are encouraged to fully engage with the intellectual community of the Institute, receiving free access to its events. Their contributions to the scholarly activity of the Institute and the School of Advanced Study are expected, typically involving a presentation of their current research in a seminar, conference, or workshop, or by organizing their own event. Fellows are also invited to deposit a recent, normally unpublished, piece of work in the open-access repository, SAS-Space, and to contribute to the Institute's blog. Any publications resulting from research undertaken during the fellowship must acknowledge the Institute. At the conclusion of their tenure, Fellows are required to submit a brief report detailing their research progress. It is important to note that living accommodation is not provided, and fellows are responsible for making their own arrangements and securing any necessary visas for their stay in the UK.
