The WIDE Grip (Global Research Internship Program) is a research internship opportunity offered by the WIDE Project and its affiliated research institutes and corporations. The WIDE Project, established in 1985 as the Widely Integrated Distributed Environment, is a prominent leader in Internet studies and operations both in Japan and globally. This program targets self-motivated researchers who have completed an undergraduate degree and are currently pursuing a Master's or Doctoral degree in fields related to the WIDE Project's scope, such as Internet technology and its societal impact. Participants are expected to be enrolled in a recognized university course of study throughout the internship. Interns engage in cutting-edge Internet studies, working under the supervision of leading faculty members from research institutes and collaborating with corporations involved in Internet development. Research topics encompass a broad range, including Internet technology (such as routing, mobility, wireless communication, security, and quantum networking) and the social implications of the Internet (including cyber laws, education, medical informatics, and e-government). While the program offers rich research and collaboration experiences, interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, living expenses, and adequate medical insurance, as the program does not provide financial remuneration. The program offers several internship periods throughout the year, with application deadlines typically three months prior to the start of the internship.
