Child Mental Health Disparities and Development Group Internship Programs

These research internship programs offer opportunities for individuals with a background in social sciences to engage in either recruitment or publishing activities related to child mental health disparities.

Research Internship
The Child Mental Health Disparities and Development Group offers research internship programs designed for individuals holding a bachelor's degree in psychology, anthropology, sociology, social work, behavioral science, human development, public health, or a related social science field. These programs are structured into two primary tracks: Recruitment and Publishing. The Recruitment track focuses on teaching interns how researchers identify and engage study participants. Interns will develop skills in communicating with members of the Latino community and gain valuable experience in conducting structured in-home and telephone interviews under supervision. Additional duties may include participant tracking, recruitment, utilizing tracking systems, data entry, assisting with quality control, and general office tasks. There may also be opportunities for data analysis, poster presentations, and accessing an interdisciplinary research team. This track requires a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week for at least 9 months, with availability for some evenings and one weekend day. Spanish speakers and licensed drivers with cars are preferred. The Publishing track provides a unique opportunity to participate in the manuscript development and publication process. Interns will become familiar with literature concerning contextual influences on the development of Latino youth, covering areas such as depression, anxiety, antisocial behaviors, substance use, neighborhood characteristics, migration, discrimination, acculturation, cultural stress, sexual risk behaviors, and family relationships. Duties include conducting literature reviews, tabulating results, preparing reference lists, editing and formatting manuscripts, assisting with abstract and manuscript submissions for conferences and publications, and managing manuscript-development meetings. This track requires a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week for at least 9 months, with availability on Thursdays. Excellent English writing skills are essential, with previous experience in academic writing, professional conferences, familiarity with word-processing and reference manager software, and some statistical background preferred. A Master's degree in a relevant social science field is also preferred for the Publishing track. Both programs value detail-oriented, reliable candidates who can work independently and as part of a team.
