The Institute of Historical Research (IHR) Internships program provides paid opportunities for new and early career researchers to develop their skills, broaden their experience, and establish lasting professional contacts within and beyond the historical research community. This program is a key initiative during the IHR's Centenary, designed to expand valuable paid experience for historians, especially given the scarcity of such opportunities. Each year, the IHR offers tailored projects, providing hands-on experience in various facets of historical scholarship and digital humanities. For instance, recent internships have included roles such as the Reviews in History Taxonomy Internship, where interns updated and refined subject categories for over 2,500 book reviews to ensure the resource accurately reflects contemporary historical thinking, promotes inclusivity, and enhances searchability. This involved assessing existing reviews, applying updated category terms, contributing expertise to project improvements, analyzing trends in historical terminology over decades, and authoring blog posts. Another example is the Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) Internship, which focused on creating online help packs and tutorial videos to improve the utility of BBIH for specific historical areas like environmental history or health history, involving editorial work, blog writing, and social media strategy development. The internships typically run for a period, often from June to September, and offer significant flexibility in scheduling as they do not demand full-time commitment. This arrangement allows interns to balance their project with other part-time work or academic commitments. While primarily remote, participants are strongly encouraged to undertake at least one in-person visit to the IHR in London to engage with the research community and utilize available resources. Each internship is supported by a bursary, acknowledging the value of the intern's contribution. The program welcomes applicants with a broad interest in history, encompassing individuals from diverse academic disciplines and professional backgrounds, adopting an inclusive definition of "historian." Applicants are expected to articulate their specific interest in the chosen internship and clearly demonstrate how the opportunity will contribute to their skill development and career trajectory. Participants gain insights into the multifaceted operations of the IHR, establish valuable connections with academics and professionals, and acquire practical skills in areas like digital humanities and editorial work, enhancing their CVs and career prospects.
