Early Career Research Associates

A non-stipendiary research associateship at the Institute of Classical Studies for UK-based early career researchers in classical studies, offering research support, library access, and an annual expense allowance.

Fellowship
The Institute of Classical Studies (ICS) offers up to four non-stipendiary Early Career Research Associate positions for a period of three years, from 2025 to 2028. These positions are open to UK-based researchers specializing in any field of classical studies, provided their doctorate was awarded no more than five years prior to 30th September 2025, and they are not currently in a university or similar position with a research component. Provisions are made for career breaks, including parental leave, caring commitments, illness, or other significant circumstances. Should a Research Associate secure a full-time position with a research component at another institution during their associateship, they are expected to resign the ICS position. These associateships are non-renewable and do not require residency in London. While the positions are non-stipendiary, successful candidates can claim reasonable research expenses up to £500 per annum. Allowable expenses cover conference attendance fees and travel, research trips (including travel to the ICS Library), research training costs, and research services such as photography of objects or manuscripts essential for research publication. Funding for professional subscriptions is generally not provided unless a strong case is made for their necessity to access resources not available through the Combined Classics Library or Senate House Library. Research Associates receive an ICS email address, access to the Combined Library is resources, and will be featured on the ICS website with a summary of their research interests. They have the opportunity to organize research-based activities at the ICS and access researcher training provided by the ICS and the School of Advanced Study. The ICS Director provides support and advice, and other forms of assistance may be available. Associates are encouraged to actively participate in the Institute is academic program, with a minimum expectation of one contribution, such as organizing an event or a networking session, for which the ICS offers promotional and facilitation support. Collaboration among Research Associates is highly encouraged. The application deadline is Monday, 26 May 2025, with outcomes expected in late June 2025 and positions commencing on or after 1 October 2025.
