The Sylvia Naish Fellowships and Scholarships, endowed by a generous bequest from Sylvia Naish, are offered annually by the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies (ILCS) for research into any area of German language and literature. Up to two awards are available to assist scholars by contributing to temporary living expenses in London or enabling those in employment to take leave to further their research. 2,500 for post-doctoral applicants, domiciled in the UK or abroad, who wish to spend a minimum of one month at the Institute, with preference given to those with a strong publications record. Sylvia Naish Scholarships, also providing up to
A
2,500, are available to second or third-year doctoral students in Germanic Studies, registered at a university in the UK or abroad, who wish to spend a minimum of one month at the Institute. The Fellowships and Scholarships are tenable for a specified period between 1 October 2025 and 31 July 2026. The Institute provides shared office accommodation with facilities like Wi-Fi and photocopying, alongside access to the Germanic Studies Library, Senate House Library, and other School of Advanced Study libraries. Award holders are granted free access to the Institute's events and are expected to actively participate in its intellectual life. They are encouraged to present their current work, organize an event, contribute to the Institute's blog, and deposit a recent, unpublished piece of work in SAS-Space. Publications resulting from the research must acknowledge the Institute, and a short report on research progress is required at the conclusion of their stay.

Application
Criteria: Applicants must wish to spend a minimum of one month at the Institute. For Fellowships, preference is given to applicants with a strong publications record appropriate to their career stage. Applicants for Scholarships must be registered for a doctoral degree in Germanic Studies at a university in the UK or abroad. The awards should not be held concurrently with another fellowship or award.
